FAQs

Should you soak halloumi before frying? ›

Why do you soak halloumi before cooking? While completely optional, many swear by this step for a softer, more flavourful, and sweeter result that will set your halloumi apart from all others. The easiest method is to soak the whole block of cheese in cold water for at least two hours (or overnight if you have time).

How do you keep halloumi from getting rubbery? ›

My halloumi is too tough / rubbery

This can happen when it's cooked for too long in the oven, so next time try a lower cook time or thicker slices. It can also happen when it's been sitting out for too long, or with reheated halloumi.

What are halloumi bites made of? ›

This appetizer recipe, which also happens to be gluten-free, features halloumi cheese, cut into cubes, breaded in a thin layer of cornmeal, and shallow pan-fried in olive oil until golden brown. A mixture of honey and chili garlic sauce is drizzled on top for a sweet and spicy combo that's perfect with the cheese.

How do you fry halloumi without sticking? ›

You want your grill pan to be nice and hot before adding the cheese! This helps prevent sticking. Brush each piece of halloumi with olive oil and season. Cook for 1-2 minutes on each side.

Why do you soak halloumi in cold water? ›

Simply patting the haloumi dry with paper towel will remove some of the saltiness, but you can also place it in a bowl of cold water to remove more of the salt, if you prefer. Just soak for 5 minutes, then pat dry with paper towel – patting dry is important to ensure the lovely golden crispy edges!

Can halloumi be undercooked? ›

Things to remember: You can't undercook halloumi – you're better to slightly under-do it than over-do it. Once it starts going golden brown, it will cook quite quickly, so be ready to flip it or remove it from the heat.

Why does halloumi make your teeth squeak? ›

This is because, unlike many cheeses, halloumi has a high pH, as no starter cultures are used in its production. It seems that when this dense casein network “rubs” against the enamel of the teeth, it produces a squeak. Other cheeses usually have a lower pH, which tends to make the casein more fragile.

Why is halloumi so expensive? ›

Halloumi is made out of sheep's milk, which is more expensive than cow's or goat's milk due to the animal milking production—though nowadays you can also find Halloumi varieties with a mix of these kinds of milk, thus lowering the price of the product.

Can you eat halloumi cold after frying? ›

Frying this cheese brings out a beautiful, salty (some would say briney) flavour in the cheese. It's great for salads and side dishes because you can serve it cold or two days old, and it will still taste nice. You can add this tasty cheese to salads as well as serve it on its own.

What are the disadvantages of halloumi cheese? ›

However, while protein and calcium work to suggest that halloumi is healthy, there's no getting away from the fact that there's also a pretty high sodium and fat content. In fact, one 28g portion of halloumi contains a whopping 9 grams of fat and 15% of your DV (Daily Value) of sodium.

What are the black bits in halloumi? ›

In the UK, halloumi is easy to find in pretty much all supermarkets. It's often rolled in dried herbs (usually mint) before being sold – which explains the little black dots you can see on the halloumi in some of my photos!

What Flavours go with halloumi? ›

Stack in style and combine fried slices of halloumi with harissa, red peppers, aubergine and hummus. If you don't fancy quite such a beastly bap, treat fried halloumi as you would a meat patty and top with salad and sauce of your choice, grilled mushrooms, avocado or salsa. Maybe hold the processed cheese slice though.

Why is my halloumi falling apart? ›

Don't slice it too thin, otherwise it will fall apart and also be too dry. About 1cm/0.5 inch thick slices are best. We used a crinkle cutter for ours, give give those grill line effects. Put the halloumi in a non-stick frying pan (no oil is needed).

Can you fry mozzarella like halloumi? ›

Cheeses that have a high melting point can be fried. While the cheese melts slightly, it will generally retain its shape in the fryer or skillet. Popular fried cheese options are cheese curds, queso blanco, halloumi, paneer, mozzarella, bread cheese, certain cheddars, and provolone.

Why is my halloumi slimy? ›

Spoiled halloumi cheese can be easily identified. If the cheese has become slimy or developed a mold, it's time to toss it out. Moreover, a strong sour smell or change in color can also indicate that the cheese is past its prime.

Does soaking halloumi remove salt? ›

After soaking, remove the halloumi from the water and allow it to drain. It's important to note that while soaking halloumi can help reduce its sodium content to some extent, it won't eliminate it entirely.

Should I keep halloumi in water? ›

How to store halloumi. An unopened packet of halloumi will keep in the fridge for up to a year. Once opened store in salt water in the fridge.

How do you get water out of halloumi? ›

The tool for the job is a cheese press, though for small quantities a tofu press (I have one similar to this) works well. I bought mine for home-made paneer and bought tofu, but have also used it for halloumi and mozarella (home made, not brilliantly successful).

How long does halloumi last in salt water? ›

Halloumi will keep in the refrigerator for as long as a year, if it's unopened. Once opened, store it in the refrigerator in salt water in an airtight container for up to two weeks. Or wrap it tightly in waxed paper, parchment paper or cheese wrap. Rewrap in fresh paper whenever you unwrap it.
